About Bethesda Improv Theater
Our Mission
Bethesda Improv Theater exists to share the joys of improvisation. We believe the skills practiced on the improv stage — listening generously, supporting your partner, saying “yes, and” — are the same skills that build stronger classrooms, workplaces, families, and friendships.
What We Do
Bethesda Improv Theater does three things: we produce shows, we teach, and we bring improv into the broader community.
Our Shows
Our shows are improvised — nothing is scripted, nothing is repeated, every performance is built in front of you. Our performing company, Precipice Improv Theater, specializes in full-length improvised comic plays: scenes, characters, and entire stories invented on the spot. Audiences come for the comedy, the surprise, and the particular thrill of watching a play that has never existed before and will never exist again.
Because we improvise full plays rather than short scenes, the comedy has time to build — characters develop, running jokes compound, and the biggest laughs come from payoffs the audience has been quietly setting up alongside us.
Our Classes
Our classes are for every experience level. Some students join us for the sheer fun of it. Others are here to grow — to listen better, think on their feet, speak up in the rooms that matter to them. And some want to perform and perfect their craft. All of these paths are welcome here, and our classes range from first workshops to rigorous training in long-form and full-length improvised plays.
You don’t need to be funny. You don’t need to be an extrovert. You only need to be willing to listen — and to say “yes.”
Our Community
We’re committed to bringing improv beyond our stage and studio. Our first community outreach took us to a retirement community in southern Montgomery County, where we performed for residents — and we’re working to expand this part of our mission, with a particular interest in partnering with senior centers, libraries, and other neighborhood institutions throughout the area.
Who We Are
Bethesda Improv Theater is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2025, based in Bethesda, Maryland, and serving the broader Washington, DC area.
We were founded by a group of people whose day jobs look nothing alike: a school counselor, an independent wealth manager, a retired federal statistician, a senior property manager, an economist who founded an international policy organization, and an intellectual property attorney. What unites our board isn’t a shared profession — it’s a shared discovery.
Each of us, somewhere along the way, found that improvisation made us better at the rest of our lives.
The economist who advises governments on disability-inclusive policy. The counselor teaching young children to regulate big emotions. The financial advisor sitting across the table from high-net-worth clients. The property manager mediating between owners and tenants. The energy-department statistician who had to learn to navigate a frustrating federal bureaucracy. The intellectual property attorney listening to clients across a negotiation table.
Analytical fields, caretaking fields, leadership fields — improv showed up for all of us.
That isn’t a coincidence. Improv is, at its core, the practice of listening hard, trusting the person across from you, and building something together that neither of you could have made alone.
It is also a great deal of fun, and for some of us, a serious artistic pursuit. Three of our board members are part of Precipice Improv Theater, Bethesda Improv Theater’s performing company, while our founding Artistic Director created Precipice in 1995 to perform full-length comic plays. One of our board members is a published author. One of us writes plays. All of us laugh a lot.
Why It Matters
We have watched improv help people speak up in meetings, parent more patiently, recover from grief, make new friends in a new city, and remember how to play. We have watched it do all of that for us. Our hope is that it does the same for you.
